Konga E-commerce Group has partnered with the Defence Headquarters to deploy a technology-enabled discount platform that will give serving and retired Nigerian military personnel access to discounted consumer goods.
The Defence Discount Scheme (DDS) is scheduled to go live on October 1, 2026, with Konga integrating its e-commerce infrastructure with the Defence Headquarters’ authentication and verification systems.
The partnership effectively turns Konga’s e-commerce platform into a digital access point for a targeted military welfare programme, allowing verified personnel and their families to shop for essential products at special prices.
The scheme covers a broad range of categories, including fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), smartphones, computers, home and kitchen appliances, food and beverages, automobiles and renewable energy products.
The initiative was unveiled in Abuja in the presence of senior military officials, government representatives and executives from Konga and Zinox Group.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; and Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, were among those present.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who attended as Special Guest of Honour, said the initiative demonstrated how technology and strategic partnerships could be used to deliver practical benefits to citizens serving the country.
“This platform demonstrates how technology and strategic partnerships can be harnessed to deliver practical benefits to citizens who have dedicated themselves to the service and security of the nation,” Akume said.
Digital verification
One of the key technology components of the scheme is the integration between Konga and the Defence Headquarters’ verification infrastructure.
Rather than providing open access to the discounts, the system is designed to authenticate eligible personnel before they can access the special prices.
A live demonstration at the launch showed how eligible military personnel would authenticate their status and use the platform to access the discounted products.
The verification layer links a commercial e-commerce platform with an institutional identity system, creating a controlled digital environment for delivering targeted benefits.
For Konga, the arrangement expands the potential use of its e-commerce infrastructure beyond conventional online retail.
Speaking on behalf of Zinox Group Chairman, Leo Stan Ekeh, the group’s General Manager, Business Development, Reginald Obiakor, said the company was committed to deploying technology to develop solutions that address practical needs.
He also acknowledged the contribution of members of the Armed Forces and said Zinox and Konga were proud to support an initiative focused on their welfare.
Beyond online shopping
The partnership also reflects the expanding role of e-commerce platforms in providing more than conventional retail services.
Through the DDS, military personnel will be able to access a wide range of everyday products through a single digital platform, potentially reducing the need to navigate multiple channels to access the available discounts.
The scheme also comes as businesses and public institutions increasingly explore technology-enabled approaches to delivering targeted services and benefits.
Konga became part of Zinox Group in 2018 and has since expanded its operations across online and physical retail channels.
Zinox has previously pursued technology access initiatives, including its Computerise Nigeria campaign, which involved partnerships with governments, educational institutions and private organisations to provide subsidised computers to students, teachers, civil servants and small business owners.
The Defence Discount Scheme represents another application of the group’s technology infrastructure, this time combining e-commerce, identity verification and targeted consumer benefits.
As the scheme goes live on October 1, eligible serving and retired military personnel will be able to use the Konga platform to access discounts across multiple product categories.
The development highlights how Nigeria’s e-commerce infrastructure is increasingly being adapted for institutional programmes, with digital verification serving as the bridge between commercial platforms and targeted public welfare initiatives.
