Spotify has unveiled two new features aimed at making music streaming more personal and interactive: User Notes and Running Mode.
The updates are designed to help listeners create stronger emotional connections with their playlists while enhancing the listening experience during workouts.
User Notes turns playlists into personal journals
With the new User Notes feature, Spotify users can attach personal notes to songs in their playlists. Whether it’s a song that reminds them of a memorable trip, a special celebration, or the moment they met someone important, users can now document those memories directly alongside the tracks.
To use the feature, users simply open a playlist they created or one containing songs they added, tap the three-dot menu beside a track, select “Add Note,” type a message, and save it. The note becomes visible to anyone who has access to that playlist, with the author’s name linked to their Spotify profile.
Spotify says the goal is to transform playlists from simple collections of songs into digital memory books that tell the stories behind the music people love.
The feature is currently available to users aged 16 and above on both free and Premium accounts in selected countries, with a wider rollout expected over time.
Running Mode adapts music to your workout
Spotify also introduced Running Mode, a feature that automatically selects and queues songs based on different stages of a run.
The feature is designed to match a user’s listening preferences and workout pace, creating a smoother and more engaging running experience. Running Mode is currently available to Premium subscribers in select markets.
Strengthening user engagement
The latest additions reflect Spotify’s broader strategy to deepen user engagement by making the platform more than just a place to stream music. By combining personal storytelling with intelligent listening experiences, the company hopes to encourage users to spend more time interacting with its platform.
The move also helps Spotify differentiate itself from competitors by offering features that go beyond traditional music discovery.
Strong growth continues
The announcement comes as Spotify continues to report strong business performance. In the first quarter of 2026, the streaming giant recorded 761 million monthly active users and 293 million Premium subscribers, while generating €4.5 billion in revenue.
The figures suggest that recent subscription price increases have had little impact on user growth, reinforcing Spotify’s position as the world’s leading music streaming platform.
With User Notes and Running Mode, Spotify is betting that adding more personal and contextual experiences to music listening will keep users engaged long after they press play.
