Snapchat has updated its content recommendation policy for Spotlight, its short-form video platform, by ending recommendations for videos created entirely with artificial intelligence (AI).
The change, which takes immediate effect, is aimed at promoting authentic, original content while reducing the visibility of mass-produced AI-generated videos that have increasingly flooded social media platforms.
Although creators can still upload fully AI-generated videos to Spotlight, such content will no longer be recommended to users outside their existing follower base. Since Spotlight relies heavily on algorithm-driven discovery, this significantly limits the reach of AI-only content.
However, Snapchat clarified that content created using its native AI-powered features—including AI filters, effects, editing tools, and creative enhancements—will remain eligible for recommendations. These videos will carry a transparency label indicating AI was used during production.
A Shift Towards Authentic Creativity
The company said the move is designed to protect the quality of the Spotlight experience by ensuring original creators have a better opportunity to reach new audiences.
Across the social media landscape, platforms have seen a rapid rise in repetitive AI-generated videos, making it increasingly difficult for authentic creators to stand out. Snapchat believes prioritising human-created content will improve user engagement and encourage meaningful creativity.

What the New Policy Means for Creators
The updated policy affects creators differently depending on how they use AI.
Creators who generate entire videos using AI tools will experience reduced discoverability since their content will no longer appear in Spotlight recommendations for new viewers.
On the other hand, creators who use AI to enhance their work—such as applying effects, improving audio quality, or using Snapchat’s built-in AI editing features—will continue to benefit from the recommendation system.
For traditional content creators, the update could provide a more level playing field by reducing competition from large volumes of automatically generated content.
Spotlight Creator Community Continues to Grow
Snapchat revealed that the number of unique creators contributing to Spotlight has grown by more than 120 percent year-on-year, highlighting the platform’s expanding creator ecosystem.
The company acknowledged that detecting AI-generated content with complete accuracy remains a challenge, meaning some content may still bypass its systems. Nevertheless, the latest policy signals Snapchat’s commitment to rewarding originality and ensuring its recommendation algorithm prioritises authentic storytelling over automated content production.
The decision reflects a broader industry trend as technology companies seek to balance AI innovation with the growing demand for genuine, human-created digital experiences.
