WhatsApp has unveiled a suite of new calling features designed to make voice and video communication more flexible, secure, and convenient across multiple devices.
The latest update introduces browser-based voice and video calling, allowing users to make and receive WhatsApp calls directly from supported web browsers without relying solely on the desktop application or their smartphones.
The announcement was highlighted by Kunal Shah, a senior WhatsApp executive, who shared details of the new capabilities as part of the platform’s continued push to improve its communication experience.
Browser calling comes to WhatsApp
One of the biggest additions is support for voice and video calls directly through web browsers.
Until now, WhatsApp Web allowed users to send messages, share files and manage conversations from a browser, but voice and video calling capabilities were limited compared with the mobile and desktop applications.
With the update, users can join and participate in calls from their browsers, making it easier to communicate while working on a computer without constantly switching between devices.
The feature also strengthens WhatsApp’s position against video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, all of which already offer browser-based communication.

Users can switch devices during calls
WhatsApp is also introducing a feature that allows users to transfer an ongoing group call from one device to another without disconnecting.
The capability enables participants to move seamlessly from a smartphone to a laptop or desktop computer while remaining in the same call, providing greater flexibility for users who alternate between devices during work or personal conversations.
Waiting rooms improve group call security
Another notable addition is the Waiting Room feature for group calls.
The new tool gives call hosts the ability to approve participants before they join a conversation, adding an extra layer of privacy and helping prevent unauthorized users from entering group calls.
The feature mirrors functionality already available on several enterprise video conferencing platforms and is expected to improve security for business meetings, classrooms and private group discussions.

Clearer conversations with noise suppression
To enhance call quality, WhatsApp has also introduced background noise suppression.
The feature automatically reduces unwanted ambient sounds during calls, making conversations clearer even when users are in busy streets, public transport, crowded offices or other noisy environments.
WhatsApp broadens its communication ecosystem
The latest rollout reflects WhatsApp’s continued evolution beyond a traditional messaging application.
In recent months, the Meta-owned platform has introduced several features aimed at improving cross-device experiences, including expanded support for tablets, enhanced privacy controls and new content-sharing capabilities.
With browser calling, device switching, waiting rooms and improved audio quality, WhatsApp is strengthening its position as a comprehensive communication platform for both personal and professional users while competing more directly with dedicated collaboration and video conferencing services.
