The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has inaugurated a new IPv6 Council Board, appointing industry leaders including ipNX Director, Olusola Teniola, as part of efforts to accelerate Nigeria’s migration to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).
The inauguration, held in Lagos, signals renewed regulatory focus on strengthening Nigeria’s internet infrastructure and preparing the country for the next phase of digital connectivity.
Teniola joins a board comprising key figures in Nigeria’s technology and telecommunications ecosystem, including Funke Opeke, Chairman of the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), Muhammed Rudman, who will serve as Chairman of the Council, technology advocate Chris Uwaje as Vice Chairman, alongside Mary Uduma, Gbenga Adebayo, Lanre Ajayi and global IPv6 expert Latif Ladid. Representatives from relevant government and regulatory institutions are also part of the board.
The Council is expected to drive nationwide IPv6 adoption through policy development, stakeholder coordination and implementation oversight.
Speaking on his appointment, Teniola described IPv6 migration as an urgent national priority rather than a future consideration.
“The transition to IPv6 is no longer a future consideration; it is an immediate priority for Nigeria’s digital economy,” he said.
According to him, growing internet usage and the rise of emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things are increasing pressure on legacy internet infrastructure, making migration to IPv6 essential.
“As data consumption grows and emerging technologies such as 5G, IoT and AI become more pervasive, we must ensure that our underlying infrastructure is scalable, secure and globally competitive,” Teniola added.
He stressed that achieving meaningful adoption would require collaboration across the ecosystem, involving telecom operators, internet service providers, enterprises, government institutions and academia.
“This is a collective responsibility. We must invest in capacity building, drive awareness and create the right policy and regulatory environment to accelerate adoption. Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind in an increasingly connected world,” he said.
The newly inaugurated IPv6 Council Board has been tasked with developing and overseeing a national IPv6 implementation strategy, tracking deployment progress and providing regular updates on adoption levels across Nigeria.
The Council is also expected to address infrastructure and technical capacity challenges while recommending incentives and policy measures to support large-scale deployment.
IPv6 is widely regarded as a critical foundation for the future internet, offering significantly larger address capacity, improved network efficiency and stronger support for connected technologies and digital services.
Teniola’s appointment further reflects ipNX’s continued role in shaping Nigeria’s broadband and internet ecosystem, particularly around future-ready infrastructure and digital transformation initiatives.
