Meta-owned messaging platform, WhatsApp, has introduced a new feature that allows users to create and set up a WhatsApp account directly on an iPad, removing the need to first link the device to an existing account on a smartphone.
The announcement was made in a blog post on Wednesday as part of the company’s efforts to improve WhatsApp’s multi-device experience and better integrate the platform across users’ devices.
According to WhatsApp, the update addresses one of the most requested features from iPad users since the app became available on Apple’s tablet.
“One of the biggest things we’ve heard from people is wanting to create a WhatsApp account directly on their iPad, without needing to link to their phone,” the company said.
Until now, users could only access WhatsApp on an iPad by linking it to an already active account on a smartphone through a QR code or one-time authentication process. With the latest update, users can register directly from the iPad app using a phone number and a one-time verification code.
Although a mobile phone is still required to receive the verification code during registration, the iPad account functions independently after setup rather than serving as a companion device.
Beyond the iPad update, WhatsApp also unveiled several new features designed to enhance user experience across its platforms.
Users can now share songs from Apple Music and Spotify directly to WhatsApp Status, allowing them to add music to their updates without leaving the app.
On WhatsApp Web and Desktop, the platform has introduced the ability to annotate and highlight PDF documents without downloading them first, making document collaboration more seamless.
The company has also expanded WhatsApp’s integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition to making calls and sending messages, users can now listen to and reply to messages, access call history and view favourite contacts while connected to their vehicle’s infotainment system.
The latest updates come weeks after WhatsApp introduced usernames, enabling users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. The platform has also begun allowing users to reserve usernames as part of efforts to reduce impersonation risks.
Meta recently launched a subscription offering for WhatsApp, providing access to premium features such as profile customisation, enhanced reactions and additional Status insights.
The latest enhancements underscore Meta’s continued investment in making WhatsApp a more versatile communication platform across smartphones, tablets, desktops and connected vehicles.
